An exhibition of artwork created by K-12 ArtsBridge school children opened at the University Art Gallery and Beall Center for Art and Technology on the campus of the University of California, Irvine, in January of 2001. A competitively selected collection of paintings, sculptures, digital art, and video, the exhibition showcased the best creative efforts of over 24,000 participating California schoolchildren. The artwork was submitted to the exhibition's curatorial committee by the ArtsBridge programs on all eight UC campuses.

A series of special events brought schoolchildren, parents, community organizations and businesses to the exhibition during its three-week run. Following the closing of the exhibition at Irvine, the show travelled to other UC campuses for exhibition during that academic year.

The first ArtsBridge program was founded in 1996 at UC Irvine by Jill Beck, Dean of the Claire Trevor School of the Arts. UC ArtsBridge is the arts education outreach program of the University of California. The mission of UC ArtsBridge is to work in partnership with California public schools to provide high quality arts education to California's K-12 school children. ArtsBridge America, a national network of 21 universities, including UC ArtsBridge, provides scholarships to qualified arts students, graduate and undergraduate, to teach the arts and conduct arts-related workshops in art, dance, drama, and music.

UC ArtsBridge promotes locally initiated arts education; consistent and sequential, hands-on instruction in the arts during the school day; exemplary models of arts teaching, particularly in integrating arts across the curriculum and professional development for public school teachers. Programs are evaluated through peer review, and administrative costs are closely controlled.
